Background - Sir Ken Knight CBE QFSM FIFireE DL
In June 2013 Sir Ken Knight published an Independent Efficiencies Review of the 46 Fire and Rescue Authorities in England commissioned by the government, entitled Facing the Future.
Until January 2013, Sir Ken was the Government's Chief Fire and Rescue Adviser for England since 2007 advising Ministers and senior officials in the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) on fire policy matters and providing advice during major and catastrophic emergencies. He was also responsible for the enforcement of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, in Crown premises in England.
Sir Ken was responsible for providing assurance to Government regarding the fire safety arrangements and operational response by fire and rescue services for the 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games.
He has previously been commissioned to produce reports on the widespread flooding in 2007, Rising to the Challenge, and was also tasked by the Secretary of State at the Department of Communities and Local Government to undertake a review in the immediate aftermath of the fire at Lakanhal House, Camberwell, London in 2009 in which 6 people tragically died.
Overseas Sir Ken has completed Reviews of the fire and rescue services in Southern Ireland, Bermuda and Gibraltar and also undertook a review of the national fire safety and civil defence arrangements in the Kurdish region of Iraq at the request of the Kurdish Regional Government.
Sir Ken is an accomplished speaker at technical conferences both in the Uk and overseas.
Sir Ken commenced hid fire service career in Surrey Fire Brigade in 1966 and subsequently, served in a number of UK fire brigades. At a principal officer level, he served as Assistant Chief Officer in London, Chief Fire Officer of Devon and the Chief Fire Officer of Dorset followed by the West Midlands Fire Service before returning to London in 2003 as London's Fire Commissioner until 2007.
Sir Ken is a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute and a Fellow of the Institution of Fire Engineers.
Sir Ken is a founder Trustee of the UK Firefighters Memorial Trust, a Trustee of the Building Research Establishment, and the independent Chairman of the Exova Board.
Sir Ken was awarded the Queens' Fire Service Medal (QFSM) for distinguished service in 1991 and honoured with the award of the Commander if the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in June 2001. He was awarded the honour of Knights Batchelor in Her Majesty's Birthday Honours in 2006 and appointed Her Majesty's Representative Deputy Lieutenant for Richmond upon Thames as part of the Greater London Lieutenancy in the same year.
